Eight states are now mulling a new “tortilla law” — forcing synthetic folic acid into corn masa flour and tortillas.
Folic acid is not the same as natural folate. It’s a synthetic form that many people — especially those with common MTHFR gene mutations (affecting up to 50%+ of certain populations) — cannot properly convert. For them, it can build up as unmetabolized folic acid and may cause real problems instead of benefits.
We already have mandatory fortification in bread and other grains. Now they want to expand it to another staple food without giving consumers a real choice.
Food freedom matters. People deserve the right to choose what goes into their bodies and their family’s meals — not have synthetic additives mandated by law.
Opt for fresh, traditional masa when possible. Support your body with bioavailable methylfolate from food or quality supplements if needed.
